Provence conjures
up the magic of Peter Mayles famous region of France around
the Luberon. But there's more to this sun-drenched region of
France. Probably France's most popular holiday destination offering
fabulous beaches, jazz festivals, bull fights, casinos and boules.
Venture inland and enjoy the pleasures of dramatic river gorges,
perched villages, mountain plateaux and Roman treasures.
Le Midi is hot in
the Summer and mild enough in Winter for lemons! However, the
Mistral can blow and only the Riviera is protected from its
forces. The Mediterranean coast has spectacular mountains and
fashionable urban resorts (Cannes, Nice, etc.).
Avoid the area in
July and August unless you want to compete with the rest of
France as they holiday en masse in this area!
The marshlands of
the Camargue and the high mountain country of the Maritime Alps
have their own wilderness appeal. Rural Provence is a delight
- bright colours and lavender-scented air plus scores of old
villages to soak up real France.
The sightseeing glories
of the South are Roman - great amphitheatres and triumphal arches.
There are medieval treasures - Avignon must not be missed. Aix
en Provence is a beautiful location - watch life from the comfort
of a cafe table and soak up the ambience!
