Every now and then something arrives that ULTRA cool and you know it will cause a storm, the Target Blu Eye is one of those products that will light the touch paper and its one of the hottest products on the market for locating police vehicles that were once impossiable to get an early warning of. The athorities don't like it but at the moment its 100% legal and undetectable.

This is a device that will give you warnings of emergency vehicles before you see them and before they see you for that. Designed to warn you that there is an emergency vehicle about by using a series audio beeps and a LED display this system listens for the unique "hello I am here signal" form TETRA radio systems and can hear for up to 1km away.

TARGET BLU EYE: BASED ON TETRA TECHNOLOGY

The innovative and new traffic safety system Target Blu Eye consists of a central unit, a control display and an external antenna. The system is based on the Airwave (TETRA) network. If an emergency service, e.g. a police car, is nearby, you will be warned in advance with an acoustic and visual alert. The signal strength meter on the control display allows you to see at first glance whether an emergency vehicle is approaching you or moving away from you.

Acoustic warnings

The communication system used by emergency services in your country generates four types of communication patterns. Target Blu Eye recognizes all four patterns and produces four different acoustic signals. All signals indicate the presence of an emergency service close to you. Visual warnings

Besides acoustic warnings Target Blu Eye also generates visual warnings by means of the signal strength meter on the control display. If an emergency vehicle approaches you, regardless from which direction, the signal strength meter gives you an estimated indication about the distance between you and the emergency vehicle.

Sensitivity mode

Two sensitivity modes can be selected on the Target Blu Eye control display:
1. Highway mode: in this mode Target Blu Eye offers the highest sensitivity, which allows the system to recognize emergency services from a large distance.
2. City mode: in this mode Target Blu Eye offers a lower sensitivity. This mode is recommended for use in urban areas.

The detection range of Target Blu Eye varies from hundreds of meters up to approximately one kilometre. The range depends on the selected sensitivity mode and the environment.

What is TETRA? TETRA stands for Terrestrial Trunked Radio and is a digital standard for radio communication used by almost all emergency services in Europe. In the UK, the TETRA network for emergency services is called Airwave.
Does Target Blu Eye function abroad? The Tetra network for emergency services is also used in the countries surrounding The Netherlands, such as Belgium, Croatia, Germany (nationwide in 2014), Austria, Great Britain, Scandinavia, Slovenia, Spain, Portugal, Hungary and Italy.
Is Target Blu Eye able to receive signals from a specific emergency service, e.g. only police cars? No, Target Blu Eye warns you for all approaching emergency vehicles, regardless of the type of emergency vehicles.
Does Target Blu Eye interrupt the communication between emergency services? No, Target Blu Eye does not interrupt the communication between emergency services or between emergency services and emergency rooms.
Is it legal to use Target Blu Eye in Europe? Yes, the use of Target Blu Eye is legal since the system is only informing the driver whether an emergency service is nearby. Moreover, Target Blu Eye does not make any difference between police vehicles, ambulances or fire trucks. You will be warned of all types of emergency vehicles. We would like to emphasize that Target Blu Eye is not able to decode the radio messages broadcasted by the Airwave network.
Does Target Blu Eye also respond to the Airwave base stations? No, Target Blu Eye does not respond to the Airwave base stations.
Does Target Blu Eye respond to police and fire stations? Target Blu Eye does not respond to police and fire stations. Only if an emergency vehicle with an activated Airwave system is present at that specific location Target Blu Eye will respond.
What is the detection range of Target Blu Eye? The detection range of Target Blu Eye varies from hundreds of meters to approximately one kilometre. The range depends on the selected sensitivity mode and the environment.
Does Target Blu Eye also respond to the Airwave frequencies used for civil purposes? No, because, the Airwave frequencies for civil use differ from the frequencies used for emergency services. Therefore Target Blu Eye does not recognize Airwave signals for civil use.
Does Target Blu Eye always warn you for approaching emergency services? All signals transmitted by emergency services will be detected by the Target Blu Eye. However, emergency services do not always transmit (periodical) signals. The system can be switched off or be in direct mode (DMO). In some European countries the TETRA network coverage is insufficient for permanent periodical transmission.

So whats involved in fitting a Target Blu Eye

The Target Blu Eye is basically three parts, The Target Blu Eye Display, the Blu Eye Receiver and a TETRA Antenna.

The antenna will go up behind the rear view mirror or on the parcel shelf.

The Target Blu Eye display where you can see it and the main Target Blu Eye box is hidden away, it does need to be able to be accesed though so you can do software updates.

Its simple to install, the only tricky part is updating the software and activating it. A good installer will do all that for you.

In use its simple, around town it can be a little noisy but on the open road it works very well giving good clear warnings, most of the time before you see the vehicle. You learn as you go along, don't judge it on the first use, give it time and do read the manual.

The key to a good receiving range on the Blu Eye is both a good antenna and a good antenna position, the engineer I use changes the antenna for a better unit, this improves the range and carful positioning helps dramatically.

Overall this is a very cool gadget and on the must have list if you want to avoid emergency vehicles and not get in their way.
