About 150 people
came with
the Liverpool Scottish party from the UK including the
Lord and Lady Mayoress of Liverpool (Councillor Edwin
Clein and Councillor Pamela Clein), the High Sheriff of
Merseyside (Mr William Fulton) and the Rector of
Liverpool (Canon Nicholas Frayling). The High Sheriff's
great uncle, Wilfred Coop, was killed in the charge at
Hooge as a member of the Liverpool Scottish. The Belgian
civic representation included the Governor of West
Flanders (an appointment of His

Majesty the King of the
Belgians), the Burgemeester of Ieper (Mr Luc Dehaene) and
the Deputy Burgemeester, Alderman Frans Lignel. Piet
Chielens , Director of the 'In Flanders Fields Museum'
led a group of local residents on a battlefield tour who
then joined us for the dedication. A group of WW1
re-enactors in uniform, encountered outside the Hooge
Crater Museum, joined as colourful but most welcome
guests at the dedication.

Dedication Service: The Acts
of Remembrance and Dedication were led by the Rector of
Liverpool, Canon Nicholas Frayling, and Father Boni Van
Looveren from Ieper. There service was conducted in
English and Dutch. The stone was handed to the Lord Mayor
of Liverpool by Lt Col CTJ Harris, and the Lord Mayor
handed into the safekeeping of the Stad Ieper. Alderman
Lignel replied on behalf of the Burgemeester.

- Memorial
unveiling: The Burgemeester of Ieper and the
Lord Mayor of Liverpool jointly unveiled the memorial.
The space around the memorial was limited but that simply
added to the intimacy of the occasion

The Reception: Those
attending the dedication walked through the woodland past
Bellewaarde Farm (Mr and Mrs Walter Huyghebaerts) and
moved on to the Reception hosted by the town of Ieper at
the Hooge Crater Museum
