Diary of events on active service.

Lance Corporal Percy Fox 1895-1976 of the 53rd Royal Warwick regiment was my grandfather. This is his war Diary,illustrated with photographs he took at the front line.Many of the photographs are presented here for the first time.

Febuary 1st 1916 Came out of trenches being relieved by the 2nd---- of the 7th Division. Slept at Bray.

Febuary 2nd 1916. Marched from Bray to Corbine,just started to shell Bray. 5 Killed. We arrive after 6 hours night marching,in rotten condition

Febuary 3rd,1916. First day in Corbine having a fine time. Nice town. Billeted with ---

Febuary 4th,1916 Jes chained to gun wheel .Game of football. Received parcel from home. Birthday card from Will

Febuary 5th,1916 Last day In Corbine,celebrated my 21st Birthday in hay loft,plenty of Quiet-----about

Febuary 6th,1916 Marched to a dirty little village 7 Km from Amnias. Swell day for a 21st birthday,I dont think

Febuary 7th 1916 addressed by C.O. In the 2 months during company training, made Lance Corporal. Spent night reading and writing

Febuary 11th 1916 Left Poulorville at 9:30 am,for Molthin. Rained all the way,arrived at 4pm. Wet through

Febuary 12 to 22nd,1916 Spent mornings cleaning guns. Afternoon playing football. During our stay here we played for the Brigade Football club, but got knocked out. Also played Anerox at rugby beating them by 19 points to 13 points

Febuary 23rd 1916. It is snowing hard. Had half a day off. 12 midnight orders come through for us to move,to relieve the French at Arras. Going on Verdon attack ---Had to turn out at 12 and pack---again at 3am to pack up. Language used cannot be put down here,

Febuary 24 th 1916. Marched 10 miles to Bouson-sue-Some. No dinner,rotten tea. Snowing. Freezing.

Febuary 25th 1916 Continued marching at 9 am Snowing and ground frozen. The frost,as we were getting the transport up a hill which took 3 hours. Continuing after this climb we pass through Vigneout and arrive at Candas at 12 oclock. Covering a distance of 19 kilos in 15 hours,this was the worse march we have done so far. On arriving nothing to eat or drink

26 th Febuary 1916 Sleeping in school room,very comftable,still snowing

27th & 28th Febuary Still at Candis,cleaning guns

29th Febuary 1916 Left for Doleus 8 Kilo away,a very nice town the only YMCA I ever saw in France. Stayed here one night

1st March 1916 Left for Coullemont 15 Kilosmarch. Billated in a rotton stinking farm. Living like pigs now. Clean billet out and start a good fire

2 nd March 1916. Snowing all day,good fire going

5th March 1916 Left for Hauteville 10 Kilo. We are now in sound of the guns again. French soldgers leaving the place

6 th March 1916 Cleaning guns etc.

7th March 1916 1st New draft arrives from England. Concert in Soldigers club.

8 th March 1916 Rifle inspection one company go to the trenches.

9th March 1916 Move for trenches at 5 pm .Pass through Arras,wait for guards 4 hours. Still snowing. Arrive in trenches at 4am after 11 hours of marching

10th March 1916 Had loook around trenches,we are in support. They are far better than at Bray. Also in the dug out electric light is layed on.

11 th March 1916. Weather improving

12 th March 1916 Sun shining,nothing doing

13 th March 1916 Germans fetch one of our airmen dow. He landed alright on their ground

14th March 1916 Another one of our airmen fetched down. Wing breaks off. Piolet falls out of mechine

15 th March 1916 Went into firing line for for two days. Distance from Fritz 200 yards. Our ammo blown up by shell. Moonlight night,very quirt. 2 Parcels from home.

16th March1916 Plenty of rifel grenades over. Sgt Landwell wounded & several others

17th March 1916 Fairly Quiet ,grub rotton 1/6 of a loaf for man. Parcel from home Tries bon!

18th March 1916 Went into support in Brown ----oubt
