Feature Article.. DijonSubscription Offer...

Dijon is both ancient and modern and one of the most beautiful provincial cities in France. It’s the capital of Burgundy, a region with few industries, which means it’s virtually unspoiled and one of France’s most picturesque and fertile areas.

Dijon is a treasure chest of architectural gems, with the Palais des Ducs et des Etats de Bourgogne as its centrepiece. The Palais has beautiful classical facades by Jules Hardouin Mansart (architect of Versailles) and Jacques V Gabriel which mask the original building, except for Philip the Good’s Tower and the Tour de Bar. The east wing houses the excellent Musée des Beaux Arts, one of France’s oldest and richest museums.

There are some lovely Renaissance houses in the city, including the 15th Century Maison Millière made of stone and wood with a carved owl and cat on the roof, the hôtels particuliers on the rue des Forges, and the ancient townhouses behind the Palais.

The Cathedral of St-Benigne and the 13th Century Gothic Notre-Dame church are particularly impressive. The owl is the symbol of Dijon and you’ll find one carved into a niche on Notre-Dame’s flying buttresses. Tradition says you should give it a stroke to bring you luck.

Dijon is a city made for walking. Start with a visit to the tourist office for a map and brochures of walking tours. The town is pedestrian-friendly and many areas are traffic-free. Visit the canal, constructed at the end of the 18th Century, with its obelisk and monument to Gustave Eiffel, who was born here in 1832, then relax in one of the many beautiful parks and gardens that dot the town.

Burgundy is a food-lover’s paradise – even the French call it a gastronomic region. It was Burgundy that gave us Kir (traditionally one third Crème de Cassis – the blackcurrant liqueur produced in Dijon – to two-thirds local Bourgogne Aligote), Boeuf Bourguignon, Coq au Vin, Charollais beef, Bresse chicken, escargots, mustard and Pain d’Epices ginger cake. And Dijon is a real feast for the senses. Visit the florist shop on the corner of rue Chaudonnerie – its owner has been named one of the best florists in France. Boutreux, the chocolaterie on the corner of rue d’Assas, has everything to tempt chocoholics. Or try the dark chocolate hearts filled with creamy caramel or perfect macaroons made at the chocolaterie on rue de Bourg.

The Amora Mustard Museum will fill you in on all you need to know about Dijon’s famous hot stuff and at the Boutique Maille shop on rue de la Liberte you’ll find a range of unique mustards. And if you thought all mustard was a yellow-coloured mix of seeds, water, salt and vinegar, think again. Pink cassis or green watercress mustard anyone?

Burgundy a generally good climate, with sunny but cold winters and hot summers. Surprisingly, the region has not been that popular with foreign property buyers up to now, perhaps because of its relative isolation. But with daily buzz flights now operating from London and the fast TGV train service, interest is growing.

Prices tend to be higher than average for France but you can still find inexpensive, habitable village houses and farmhouses in need of restoration in most areas.
