Happy New Year!

There has been a buzz of activity on our web sites. Over 1000 visitors yesterday - so many of you must be looking for Rentals or properties to buy in France!

As you will know from our earlier email we have changed our database on 1st-for-French-Property and Europe-Property. We now offer many more facilities - including Advanced Search, Sorting by Price, Region, etc. Perhaps the most significant change has been the addition of the MY NOTIFY system - this sends out email alerts when new properties are added to the database. The emails are only sent when your submitted criteria match the property description. If you wish to subscribe to this service - please go to http://www.1st-for-french-property.co.uk/notify.htm

Over the next month, we will adding new features to our rental database system - watch this space as they say

A big request- STILL!: We need articles for this newsletter!!

A few months ago - somebody posed a query about internet services in France.

Many thanks to Karen Greenwood for this reply...
"Our friends have the
internet and I think they use Liberty Surf. Also, our agent has a French ISP
which is Wanadoo (I'm sure it's a sister company to either Google or Lycos)."

Anybody have any other recommendations for an ISP in France?

Feature Article.....   LANGUAGE LEARNING IN GENERAL

Book Sale

Often, the first time we get down to learning a language is in the middle years of schooling.  Often also it is a deeply disappointing experience and many people “English is the global language”, a feeling perhaps reinforced when we sit in front of our computers or hear foreign voices on the radio expressing themselves so well in English.  This is comforting but not terrible relevant when we are faced with the garage mechanic or the central heating engineer in our chosen part of France, Spain or Italy, whose only language is his own, and that often a patois or strangely regionally accented version of the original.

So what is the best route for upgrading your own faltering knowledge of the language of our chosen second country?  I would suggest that the first step is to give yourself a revision course in English.  Tell me, what is a relative clause?  Know the difference between the definite and the indefinite article?  What is an object pronoun?  How are you doing?  If these questions are easily answered, proceed to the next square.  If not, then get some good work in on your own language so that you can move on to the next.

Why do I emphasise this?  I do so because our European counterparts have on the whole been taught their languages in the good old fashioned way, ie with exercises based on accuracy.  Their “endings” have to match – their words are feminine or masculine, or neuter in the case of German.  They have extra moods and what is worse they use them well.

Embarrassingly for us, most Europeans speak more accurately than we do – they have a good grasp of their own grammar.

Of course it is perfectly possible to get by with a few words and a lot of gestures and good will.  Of course it is, and good on any one who does so.  If you are living in the country though, there will come a time when you need to express yourself accurately and with deep feeling.  This is where a steady study of your second language will help.
