A Brace of Nieuports

October 1999

Built side by side, these two models - one a Nieuport 16c kit from Toko, the other a Nieuport 17c from Esci of Italy took me only a couple of weeks to complete, which for me is fast...
The 16c - the green one - is another easy kit from Toko, although the rear undercarriage legs are too long; the struts are of varying length and the cowling is a poor fit. I had to drill the stabiliser to accomodate the elevator control wires. Next time I intend to drill the holes in the right place.  That aside, it made a nice change not to worry about super-detailing or where all the wires go. The only additions were strips of black Champagne foil on the outer sides of the V-struts, meant to represent the rocket mountings (thanks, Matt.)
The other kit had been hanging around in the cupboard for two years. The Esci 17c was basically built as per the instructions, although I couldn't help making a few refinements to the interior, which had some very coarse mouldings for the cockpit floor and interior.I also sanded down the V-struts and applied foil to make the metal bands.
I first cut off all of the interior mouldings with a blunt chisel and a chainsaw, and sanded the sides smooth with coarse - grade sandpaper, before applying two-by-four timber to make the cockpit floor. I made a seat from an old armchair and a joystick from a rigid steel joist.

The finish colour was Humbrol aluminium enamel applied with a brush and buffed with a soft cloth.
Anyway, both models were rigged with my trusty elastic thread and superglue and look fine on the (now) overcrowded shelves above the computer.  ;-)
