The main building follows the traditional pattern of a mediaeval house and was rebuilt in the last part of the 15th century. The Inglenook bar - once the Main Hall - had fireplace and ceiling added in the 16th century and the fine beams are original.
'The Rose and Crown' was first granted a licence to sell ale in 1612 and can truly claim to be one of Somerset's oldest pubs. In 1976 the name was changed to 'The Bull Terrier' by a previous owner.
Today 'The Bull Terrier' remains an unspoiled village inn serving the local community and visitors alike.
We provide a choice if 10 starters and over 25 main course meals. Delicious home made Pate, Steak & Kidney Pie, Smoked Trout Terrine, Chilli con Carne and Vegetarian dishes are among the House specials. These are served informally in the bars with an extensive choice of deserts and coffee & liqueurs to follow.
We also provide Bar Snacks, Sandwiches and Ploughman's to cater for the lighter appetites.
Party bookings up to 24 can be arranged. Table reservations are welcome.
We have three bars - the Inglenook, the Snug and Common Bar.
Also provided is a Family Dining Room where parents and children may enjoy a meal together.
'The Bull Terrier' has a pretty walled garden with attractive views of the surrounding hills.
The bar has a choice of four traditional ales, two lagers, Guinness and Thatcher's Original Cider which is all served in fine condition and the pub is renowned for the excellent quality of the House Wines.
On the A371 midway between Wells and Shepton Mallet in the Village of Croscombe. Outside the pub is the mediaeval cross and to the rear is the fine village Church where Jacobean pews and carvings should not be missed.
There is a footpath to Croscombe across the fields, from the Bishop's Palace moat at Wells. The two mile walk followed by a drink or lunch is recommended.
