SHIELDS POLYTECHNIC CLUB
CUPS
AND TROPHIES
ROAD RUNNING
The Polytechnic Memorial
Shield. This trophy was presented to the club in 1920,
by a group of members in recognition of those Poly members who fell in the
Great War. It is awarded to the first
member home in a nominated road race. In
the recent past this has been the WOW l0k.
The
Clive Cookson Cup. Presented
by Clive Cookson in 1921, the trophy was awarded to the club finishing first
team in the annual Clive Cookson Road Race. This race was discontinued because
of traffic related safety concerns until 2004 when it was decided to rename
the club 10k race to the Clive Cookson 10k and award the Clive Cookson Cup
to the winning team of that race.
The
Fairbairn Cup A cup awarded to the first
man to finish in this annual yacht handicap. The cup was given to the Club
by George Fairbairn in 1934. Mr. Fairbairn owned a shoe shop in North Shields.
The
Formica & King Street Club Cup. Norman Davies persuaded both
organisations to jointly provide this trophy Which
is awarded to the first female athlete to finish in the Fairbairn Cup.
The David Scanlon Trophy. First awarded
in 2004. This is our most recent award and is given to the winner of the Clive
Cookson 10K race.
The Welch Trophy.
Presented by Welch & Sons on 1st
Dec. 1976. The firm’s principal Ian Welch OBE, JP, MA. Is a Patron of NSP.The
cup (also known as the Senior 10k Cup) is awarded to the first NSP runner
in the Blyth Grand Prix.
The
Alan Lamb Memorial Shield. This trophy was gifted to
the Club by Stan Lamb in memory of his brother, Alan was one of the most versatile athletes
ever to represent NSP. His range of ability spanned 800 metres to the Marathon. The trophy is awarded
to the first NSP member in the Morpeth to Newcastle Road Race.
The
Tommy Anderson Memorial Shield. Awarded
to the first 17 – 19 yr old in the Senior 10k championship.
The
Veterans 10k Shield. Stan Lamb provided this trophy in 1993. It
is awarded to the first Vet in the Blyth Grand Prix
The Marathon Shield. The first
NSP member in the London Marathon.
The
Junior Grand Prix Cup. Awarded to the overall winner
of the Junior Grand Prix.
CROSS
COUNTRY.
The
Jubilee Shield. This trophy was presented by a group
of members on 30th may 1977. It is named after the Jubilee School in North
Shields where the Poly once had it’s headquarters.It
is awarded to the winner of the Senior Cross Country Championship usually
incorporated in the North Eastern Cross Country Championships.
The
John Saunders Memorial Trophy. John Saunders was a local sports reporter &
his parents gave this trophy in his memory. It is awarded to the winner
of the senior men’s cross country harrier league.
The
Cross Country Cup. Presented to the Club by
an anonymous donor on 16th November 1981.The cup is to be awarded
to the Inter Womans Cross
Country Champion. Regrettably
the cup is missing, any information as to it’s whereabouts would
be appreciated.
TRACK
AND FIELD.
The
Evening News Cup. Presented
by the Evening News in March 1960, it is awarded to the Girls Track &
field Champion.
The
Hudson Cup. This cup was presented to
the Club by Mr.
& Mrs. R N Hudson on 15th November 1981.
Alice Hudson was a coach with NSP for many years until her retirement in 2002.
This cup is awarded to the Inter Womans Treack & Field Champion.
The
Arthur Trophy. Gifted to the Club
by Mrs. M. Arthur on 29th November 1978.
Awarded to the Junior
Womens Track & Field Champion.
The
Hill Carter Cup. Hill
Carters was a department store in North Shields. The Company donated the cup in May 1963. It
is awarded to the Ladies Track & field Champion.
The
Beaty Challenge Cup. Presented to the Club by
Mrs. P Beaty on 23rd June 1982. It is awarded to
the Colts Track & Field Champion.
The
Ron Young Trophy. Given to the Club by Mr. Ron Young
on 8th November 1982.Awarded to the Youths Track & Field Champion.
The
Boys Track & Field Championship Trophy. Awarded to the Boys Track & Field Champion.
SPECIAL
AWARDS.
The
John Michael Earnshaw Trophy. Presented to the Club by Mr. & Mrs. Jack Earnshaw in memory of their son who was a
very promising young athlete. This award is generally regarded as the most
prestigious of all the Club’s trophies.
It is awarded to the athlete who has attained
the highest
standard during the year.
NSP
Supporters Association Merit Award. Presented by the Supporters Association on 28th
November 1979. It is to go to an athlete who has given excellent service but not
yet a winner of a major award.
The
Trevor Stopford Memorial Trophy. 1983 . To a young sprinter making
above average progress in his/her event.
The
Chipchase Field Events Trophy Presented by Dorothy Chipchase, a Life Member of NSP & first class field
events athlete. In respect of perfomance of outstanding
standard & merit as judged by the throwing coaches.
The
Helen Oughton Memorial Shield. Awarded
to the most promising young middle distance female of the year.
