Message:  I was delighted to come across this website - such nice
photo's of Stuntney & Ely Cathedral. My paternal grandmother
was in-service at Stuntney hall in the early 1990's.
Grandfather worked as a farm labourer; I believe he may have
worked with the shires. They left Stuntney sometime after
their marriage, in the village, in 1911 - to start a new
life in King's Dyke nr. Peterborough, where grandfather
worked in the brickyards. I visited the village and church
with my wife and young daughter some years ago. The
gentleman who let us into the church expalined that the last
Fretwell had left the village, just a few months earlier :(

Message:  I would just like to reply to anonymous whoever that
person is. Yes I very much wanted to join both the
committees but unfortunately my health has been very poor
and I have had a lot of hospital and doctors appoinments.
By six in the evening I am exhausted and in so much pain
that all I can do is lie down. I very much wanted to make
a contribution to village life because I am a very
community minded person. So whoever is out there judging
me, perhaps you should get to know me before making
anonymous criticisms that are not valid. At least I took
ownership of my comment. I would have liked to organise a
scrabble club, and a book club and would willingly help
out wherever the help is needed. As it happens since there
were no houses for sale in Stuntney, I am moving to
Littleport where there is a lot of scope for volunteering
in the community. What I see clearly in Stuntney, coming
in as an outsider is a divided community which is a pity.
What makes a village interesting are its inhabitants and
their differing backgrounds and differing lengths of time
they have been in the village and different places they
have come from to be in this lovely peaceful village.
I thought I was in Heaven when I first moved to stuntney
and I still appreciate its peacefulness but for me
Littleport will be the right place for my present
circumstances. I am starting my own tutoring business for
children aged 5-14 called Rainbow Tutoring and there are
two primary schools in Littleport from which to draw my
 pupils.
I have to say that I am very impressed with the Stuntney
website. It is a great place to make comments. if we are
going to make negative comments then they should not be
 anonymous.

Message:  I believe it's unfair that Elizabeth should have made
these comments. Maybe she should have come to and taken
part in, events that have taken place while she has lived
 here before making any them.
It's not just living here that counts, it's also about
being part of the community. Perhaps Elizabeth would like
to join the Social Club committee and/or the Village
Council and see what goes on behind the scenes. Both these
bodies work very hard for the benefit of the village, but
the apathetic approach to village life by the people who
 live here defies belief.
'I don't actually want to do anything myself, but I'll
quite readily condemn those who do' seems to be the
 general consensus.
In a village survey conducted a couple of years ago,
suggestions were made as to possible activities that could
be put on, but those people didn't come forward to
 say 'I'll do that'.
In other words, the committee members (many of whom have
full time jobs) can put their hearts and souls (and time)
into organising something and 'maybe we'll come along,
enjoy their hard work and then retreat back into our own
 world'.
In general, very few locals support events that are put on
and there are certainly no volunteers to join said bodies
to help contribute to Village life. Everybody is welcome
to attend all meetings, not just the AGM's or when there
are special issues to be discussed. That means you
 Elizabeth.
The Village Council AGM is to be held on Tuesday 10th
November and the Social Club AGM on Wednesday 18th
November. By the way, only the committee members have
attended the AGM's in the last couple of years, so that
gives some idea of the concern of existing Villagers.
If any of you out there have any interest in keeping your
village alive please come and join in.

Message:  I have lived in Stuntney for 3 months and really love the
village but I agree with Sylvia Bell that it needs more
life to it. We have a great facility in the village hall
but it does not seem to be used during the day except for
the occasional coffe morning. It could be used for a
mother and toddler group or a preschool group or all sorts
of other things that I can think of. What about a cooking
demonstration class. I would be happy to organise any of
those things. Tell me what you think. I know that i am new
to the village and love its quietness but there is quiet
and then there is a ghost town as Sylvia mentioned.

Message:  Maybe I should not comment as I no longer live in
Stuntney, but I feel it might be a good idea to take on
board the development plans put forward.
When I lived in Stuntney, in the 1950s to 1960s, it was an
 OK place to live.
It was great having a village shop, a pub and most of all,
 a village school.
I have visited Stuntney several times over the past 10
years and I can truly say the place is like a ghost of its
 former self.
I have visited all times of day, both during the week and
at weekends and it is totally deserted. Stuntney needs new
life breathed into it, before it expires all together.
If and I mean, if, a high standard of housing is built in
the village it can only benefit Stuntney, surely.

prime time documentary series for BBC television
called ‘Britain from Above’. As part of this series we are
producing a programme about rural life in Britain over the
past 60yrs. On this particular show we will be featuring
the Stuntney and the Cole Ambrose Estate. We are due to
film there next Friday the 16th of June. In addition to
this we are also trying to find as many old photos as we
can, photos that may depict rural life in Stuntney over the

far been rather difficult and we are hoping that anybody
here might be able to put us in contact with people in the

Message:  Just been reading the Guest Book. Feel a bit sorry for
Emma who left a message in October saying there was
 nothing to do in Stuntney.
When I was a girl living in Stuntney in the 1950/1960 we
were never bored. We had fields in which to play. We
walked for miles every day or rode on our bikes. Sometimes
we hung around in a large group, just talking.
In winter, we would go into the what we called, the
football field and slid around the frozen pond (no skates,
just wellington boots). The droves behind the houses were
great when it snowed. In summer they were just as much fun
as we looked for birds nests in the hedges. It was lovely
to see after a short while sweet little birds, mouths
 open, waiting to be fed.
On Sundays, if it was fine, my friend Jenny Norman (who
also lived in Steward close) and I would cycle into Ely
and listen to the choir practicing in the Cathedral. We
didn't go in. We just sat outside with out backs against
the ancient walls, enjoying the lovely voices.
Have things really changed so much in Stuntney. Or is it
that young people have changed and are no longer capable
 of entertaining themselves?

Do you remember Ms McGees sweet store next to the Anchor

Whenever I see green and yellow together I think of

Glad to see some shire horses still are.

While on a sea shore gazing over the sea,
From a distant land that means little to me.
Thinking if I could turn back time,
 To where would I be?

At a place near Stuntney not far from Ely,
On a farm called Nornea, that’s where I’d be.
Playing before time, skinned knee and free,
As one with a young girl and her pet Trixie.

Honey suckled arches with wren’s nests so tiny.
Sticky buds and conkers from the shady chestnut tree.
Missed kiss, thatched summerhouse , hedge shaped like a
 Scotie.
Little blue flowers creeping over crumbling steps going
 nowhere like me.

Eating juicy Victoria plums, Cox’s apples and pears fresh
 from the tree.
Fragrance of lemon balm, mint lavender and tansy,
Roses and the smell of English rain, but the best smell
 were thee.
Secret paths, box hedges, we knew every nook and cranny.

Swallows nests in the dark shed, lemon barley from the
 scullery.
Sound of the rustling beech trees a he haw from Jenny the
 donkey.
Somersaults from straw stacks and hay barn fantasy.
Giant carthorses, blue cow and a goat named Nancy.

With a tear thinking how I missed Nornea with she.
Oneness and timelessness came back to me.
And in my heart I was still there, forever would be.
Then the teardrop fell and joined back with the sea.

 Mickey.

if you have any, if not would you be able to gather any
photo's together. I think the team used to play in green
and yellow and my Dad (David Collen) and uncle
Alan "Snowy" Fretwell used to play for them.
