you replace the G,D,A and bottom E string, with top E,B,G

same effect when playing with a regular tuned guitar. Mainly

Message:  Dear Lee.

Without seeing it myself I couldn't say. It could be the
thread on the nut, which quite often is made of brass and
strips easily. If this is the case, just get a new nut!
If it's the rod itself, then you have problems, you will
need a luthier to sort it.
It could also be the base of the rod which has slip out of
place, when you tighten it, it slides up the neck as it's
not connected to anything. Rickenbaker basses were famous
for that, I had to have loads of new rods made to my design
cause the Rick ones where crap!

Message:  I thought it would be fun to start a thread that has
nothing to do with the name change or Taylor Guitars
 Corporation :)

So, I will post some photos soon, but I wanted to give you
my assessment of how these four brands of guitars compare
in my opinion. I own a couple of Taylors, two Martins, one
Goodall, and one Olson so i speak from a little experience.
Consider this my contribution to "Guitar Public Service
 Announcement 101" :D

Taylors - without a doubt, in my humble opinion, one of the
finest acoustic guitars money can buy. I've tried and
bought a few. Great sounding guitar, and what appealed to
me initially (and still does) is the amazing woodworking
and wood selection - to me, most of the Taylors are more
than instruments - they are pieces of art. Moderate price
(note i am NOT talking prices here), good value for the
buck, I think. Creative design ideas, and at the forefront
of changing guitar designs (e.g. NT neck, ES electronics).

Martins - the ol' standby. Some I like; some are just ok, I
think. Admitedly, I haven't played very many of them. I own
a J40 (first Martin I ever bought) which I like. After
buying that, I went to a shop to look at others, picked up
a Taylor, played it, and well... the rest is history. Since
then, I recently bought a Martin Graham Nash sig model
which I like very much. Again, many of the Martins have
great woods, the classic Martin look and sound and are
wonderful instruments. I haven't found them to resonate as
well as some of the Taylors, but that could just be my dumb
 luck. Great guitars.

Goodall - ah. I bought a Goodall last year. Sight unseen
(except for a photo on the web), based upon rave reviews by
people I trust (and he knows who he is :) ). I love my
Goodall. Goodall doesn't seem to use much, if any plastic
 in binding or purfing. All woods as far I've seen thus far;
but again, i've only played 4 of them (3 in a store, and
the 1 i bought). But I love the guitar. I'm headed to
Hawaii soon and plan to visit the Goodall factory. Assuming
that all happens, I'll take some pictures and post them for
your viewing pleasure and entertainment. I love the sound
of the guitar, and I love the feel. More expensive than
Taylors, primarily because they don't get discounted the
way Martins or Taylors seem to.

Olson. Holy cow. First, this is w/o a doubt, my favorite
guitar. Expensive. Period. Absolutely stunning workmanship,
woodworking, woods, and sound. I love this guitar.
Expensive. Have I said that already? Is it better than a
Taylor or Martin or Goodall? Honestly, I have a hard time
looking at my guitars and ranking them as to best looking
or best sounding. They all look nice. They all sound great.
I'm just particularly attached to this Olson though. Small
shop aka one guy - Jim Olson. Nice case too. I'll post
 pictures soon.

Anyway, my main goal in this thread was to start a thread
on guitars - a variety of brands. I've excluded a number of
brands, primarily because I don't own other brands of
acoustic guitars except for a Guild, which, in my case,
does not compare to any of the others....that isn't not a
knock or judgement on Guild or its guitars - it's a comment
 about the one I own.

Hopefully this thread will spur some conversation. I'd like
to hear others' comments about brands - what have they
found that they've liked about their guitars - whether they
be Taylor, Guild, etc or Tacoma or Breedlove, etc? I've
looked at Breedlove for a long time, also Collings - nice
 guitars. I don't own those.

 What do you folks think?

Message:  I love playing guitar solo's on the Les Paul as it seems to
 respond to my every touch.

But in saying that, I do love playing rhythm on the Strat as
it has a very distinct sound and makes me play in a
 different way.

Either way, the Les Paul is a far better made and designed
guitar than the Strat, and requires a lot more skill to build.
Gibson have been around building guitars from the early
1800's, they are experts and it shows. As Fender was an
electronics expert and his guitars were built without any
prior knowlage to the craft. That's why basically if you
think about it, Fender guitar are just a nicely shaped
coffee table with a neck bolted on.

I'm not being unfair to Fender as even though his guitars
are basic, they still have a very high build quality for
what they are, and that has made them very ditinctive and
 unique.
More people associate the shape of a Strat with the
diffinitive electric guitar than any other guitar ever made.

Either way, I have been using my Strat a lot lately and I'm
 loving it!!

Message:  Strat v Les Paul

In the war of rock and roll guitar, the battle has always
been between a Fender Stratocaster and a Gibson Les Paul.
There are other guitars to be sure, but the primary weapons
for guitar soldiers since the fifities have been the
 aforementioned.
Sure, you got your Telecasters and SG’s, both fine guitars.
You got your Rickenbackers and Danelectros. You got your
myriad Strat copies in all their permutations, your semi-
hollowbody ES-335’s and their ilk. But except for the
Tele’s, SG’s and 335’s, which are true "players" guitars,
the others are more for looks than they are for playing.
And there’s nary a decent tone to be wrung from them!
I’m sure a lot of you are thinking, "How can he just
dismiss all these other guitars?" And "What’s so special
about Strats and Les Pauls?" So let me explain my position
and answer these two valid questions.
Basically, I can dismiss all these other guitars because
all the great guitar players (with a few notable
exceptions) have already done so. I’m just taking their
lead. My opinion on Rickenbackers and Danelectros is that
they have a distinctive look and style that is great for
achieving a certain aesthetic on stage, but the sounds they
produce are mediocre at best. They are also not sturdy,
tough pieces of equipment. Rickenbackers, in particular,
are very brittle and do not hold up well. Danelectros are
 pressboard. ‘Nuff said!
There are, however, other guitars that are great pieces of
equipment and sound fantastic. Telecasters and SG’s , for
example, are also two of the great electric guitars. There
are good reasons why these two stalwarts are not as
prevalent as Strats and ‘Pauls’, though.
The Tele is a classic rhythm instrument, as evidenced by
the guys who have made it their main axe: Keith Richards,
Steve Cropper and Bruce Springsteen. It has also been
worked to perfection by Roy Buchannon, Danny Gatton and
blues great Albert Collins -- the "Master of Telecaster" --
, so it can be a good lead guitar, as well. But, tonally,
it has a very narrow range. It’s the same with the Gibson
SG. Duane Allman sure made that sucker sing with a slide.
But it’s not nearly as versatile as a Les Paul. These
guitars always sound the same and therefore do not have
the "range" of tonal qualities that Strats and ‘Pauls’ have.
This is the greatest thing that a Strat or a ‘Paul’ have
going for them, a "range" of tonality so that they fit a
wide variety of musical applications. They are both strong
and sturdy, they are both great feeling and playing
guitars. But it is their tonal versatility that makes them
special. So, are they the same? Of course not! Why would
you choose one over the other? Let me tell you.
Let’s take a look at the Strat now shall we? Let’s see,
who’s played a Strat that we know about (Lots of pretend
head scratching). Let’s see, um….oh yeah, Jimi Hendrix,
Eric Clapton, Jerry Garcia, Jeff Beck, Buddy Guy, Stevie
Ray Vaughan and so on. Many of the best guitarists of all
time! And they not only don’t sound the same compared to
each other, they somehow managed to coax a wide variety of
 tones from their axe.
A Strat sounds like a Strat, yes. But, a Strat sound has a
lot of options. It’s typically not a real fat tone, more
stinging and biting. But as Clapton demonstrates, it can be
fat and chunky, too. It can produce a smooth jazzy sound a
la Jeff Beck and also has that signature "out of phase"
sound that people like Robert Cray use very well.
Now, what about the Les Paul? Only people such as Jimmy
Page, Neil Young, Peter Frampton, Gary Moore, Dickie
Betts….you get the picture. It has the ultimate fat tone,
hands down. It’s a great guitar for blues, jazz or heavy
rock and can also sound very sweet and chirpy. Frampton
really brought out the clear, bell like tonalities it can
produce. But no one better showcased the Les Paul in all
its tonal glory than Jimmy Page (and I think the old man
Les himself, would agree with me on this!). Page displayed
the ‘heaviness and fatness’ this guitar is famous for. He
created some of rock guitars’ greatest chunky rhythms as
well as incredible, soaring leads. With effects or without,
it is unmistakably a Les Paul. It’s a very big sound.
So, put down that no-name brand! Stop looking for something
obscure or "cutesy" to get that great tone. Instead, go for
what everyone already knows will sound great, and make it
 your own.

Message:  Nelson: "Order the signal, Hardy."

 Hardy: "Aye, aye sir."

Nelson: "Hold on, this isn't what I dictated to Flags.
 What's the meaning of this?"

 Hardy: "Sorry sir?"

Nelson (reading aloud): " England expects every person to do
his or her duty, regardless of race, gender, sexual
orientation, religious persuasion or disability.' - What
gobbledegook is this for God's sake?"

Hardy: "Admiralty policy, I'm afraid, sir. We're an equal
opportunities employer now. We had the devil's own job
getting 'England ' past the censors, lest it be considered
 racist."

Nelson: "Gadzooks, Hardy. Hand me my pipe and tobacco."

Hardy: "Sorry sir. All naval vessels have now been
 designated smoke-free working environments."

Nelson: "In that case, break open the rum ration.. Let us
splice the mainbrace to steel the men before battle."

Hardy: "The rum ration has been abolished, Admiral. Its
part of the Government's policy on binge drinking."

Nelson: "Good heavens, Hardy. I suppose we'd better get on
with it ........... full speed ahead."

 Hardy: "I think you'll find that there's a 4 knot speed
limit in this stretch of water."

Nelson: "Damn it man! We are on the eve of the greatest sea
battle in history. We must advance with all dispatch.
Report from the crow's nest please."

Hardy: "That won't be possible, sir."

 Nelson: "What?"

Hardy: "Health and Safety have closed the crow's nest, sir.
No harness; and they said that rope ladders don't meet
regulations. They won't let anyone up there until a proper
 scaffolding can be erected."

Nelson: "Then get me the ship's carpenter without delay, Hardy."

Hardy: "He's busy knocking up a wheelchair access to the
 foredeck Admiral."

Nelson: "Wheelchair access? I've never heard anything so
 absurd."

Hardy: "Health and safety again, sir. We have to provide a
barrier-free environment for the differently abled."

Nelson: "Differently abled? I've only one arm and one eye
and I refuse even to hear mention of the word. I didn't rise
to the rank of admiral by playing the disability card."

Hardy: "Actually, sir, you did. The Royal Navy is under
represented in the areas of visual impairment and limb
 deficiency."

Nelson: "Whatever next? Give me full sail. The salt spray
 beckons."

Hardy: "A couple of problems there too, sir. Health and
safety won't let the crew up the rigging without hard hats.
And they don't want anyone breathing in too much salt -
 haven't you seen the adverts?"

Nelson: "I've never heard such infamy. Break out the cannon
and tell the men to stand by to engage the enemy."

Hardy: "The men are a bit worried about shooting at anyone,
 Admiral."

 Nelson: "What? This is mutiny!"

Hardy: "It's not that, sir. It's just that they're afraid of
being charged with murder if they actually kill anyone.
There's a couple of legal-aid lawyers on board, watching
 everyone like hawks."

Nelson: "Then how are we to sink the Frenchies and the Spanish?"

 Hardy: "Actually, sir, we're not."

 Nelson: "We're not?"

Hardy: "No, sir. The French and the Spanish are our European
partners now. According to the Common Fisheries Policy, we
shouldn't even be in this stretch of water. We could get
hit with a claim for compensation."

Nelson: "But you must hate a Frenchman as you hate the devil."

 Hardy: "I wouldn't let the ship's diversity co-ordinator
hear you saying that sir. You'll be up on disciplinary report."

Nelson: "You must consider every man an enemy, who speaks
 ill of your King."

Hardy: "Not any more, sir. We must be inclusive in this
multicultural age. Now put on your Kevlar vest; it's the
rules. It could save your life"

Nelson: "Don't tell me - health and safety. Whatever
happened to rum, sodomy and the lash?"

Hardy: As I explained, sir, rum is off the menu! And
there's a ban on corporal punishment."

 Nelson: "What about sodomy?"

Hardy: "I believe that is now legal, sir."

 Nelson: "In that case................................ kiss
 me, Hardy.
