Message:  My family used to run the mill, I used to live at Mill
cottages, with my mum and dad Ray and Audrey Kemp, my
grandfather was the Richard who C Jones refers to so I'm
assuming they were cousins. Are you Ethels son.

When the mill had automated mixing machines circ 1950,
when my father was the baker.

There used to be a sweet shop at the side of the blackpig,
the Richardsons run it I think they had a taxi service
too, pigs used to be in a pen out the front.

I was from a family of 3, Gill now lives in Blackfen,
Graham in Lincolnshire and I - Jan live in Folkestone.

I remember a lot of names mentioned on this page

1977 his father was John White born Woodnesborough 1878,
his father was James White born Woodnesborough 1846 he was
married to Sarah Feakins widow (nee Burch) the 1881 census
shows children: James 11, Ellen 9, Jane 7, Annie 5, John
(my relative) and George 3 mths. James' father was Daniel
White born Preston 1811. I didn't know anything about my
father's family. So anyone out there with any more info I
would love to hear from you.

Message:  I was thrilled to find this wonderful website whilst
researching my family history. Found my maternal
grandfather living in Staple as a six year-old in the 1881
census. He most probably attended Staple School while his
father and step-brother were ag labs. Chances are they
worked on the farm of Mr.Conley (farmer) since both the
lads married Conley girls. Does anyone know where I can
find school records for that time? Village pictures give
great idea of what it would have been like for the family
to live in the village. Thanks to everyone involved, what
a great idea. Would love to hear from anyone connected to
Conley/Harris/Cook families of that period. Susan

Message:  Have been visiting the Staple website and found it very
interesting I am now in my 91st year having been born in
1919. My uncle and aunt Mr & Mrs R.B.Kemp lived at Mill
House and my uncle was the Owner of the mill and ran a
Milling and bakery business. I use to spend all my Summer
School holidays at the mill and used to go around the
district with the baker on his rounds. The original old
windmill was destroyed by fire in I believe 1914 and
although the fire brigade were quickly on the scene, due
to the lack of water the mill was lost. My uncle had
replacement mill built near to the site of the old mill
which is the brick building behind the Mill House. Last
time I visited the area the mill and Miil House were still
although I would like to know what the building is now
used for. The bakery was in part of the house and had a
coke fired brick oven. There were two bakes each morning
and in the early days I remember the bread was delivered
by horse & van. My uncle kept three horses. There were
tree coucins, Eva,Sidney,Raymond and Lewis. Lewis was the
youngest and was always called "Links". I have many happy
memories of Stsple which I loved.

Message:  I lived in The Dovecote at the bottom of Grove Road from
mid 1981-84. Loved my time there, although commuting to
London each day was a bit much. Particularly loved the old
photos section. Would have liked a bit more on the Grove
 estate, but a great site.
