Message:  I posted a message on this forum several years ago
concerning my grandfather, Walter Thomas, who lived at
Fancy's Folly at the turn of the 19th/20th century. From
there he emigrated to Canada and then disappeared.
Following extensive investigation the family eventually
discovered what had happened to him. Having resolved that
mystery there is one other and we hope that somebody in
the area may be able to throw some light on the matter.
My grandmother, Annie Thomas, nee Cuthbert, was Walter's
second wife. His first was Florence, nee Williams, and
they had two daughters, Lilian and Ivy. Despite extensive
investigation we can find no record of any kind relating
to what happened to Florence who disappeared from the
scene at the end of the nineteenth century. If anybody
has any information about what became of to her we'd love
 to know.

My great grandparents (James and Emma Baker) moved to Staple

living at Mill Cottage in 1916 as I have a postcard
addressed to them there. I notice you have an old photo of

Message:  Hi my ancestors the Cleaver's come from a variety of places
in East Kent - Goodnestone, Staple, Woodnesborough and now
Dover to name a few. My great-great grandad lived in a Down
Court in 1881. His name was Israel Moses Cleaver. He lived
there with his wife Alice (who was born in Staple), his
father James (born 1831 in Swalecliffe), and his brother
 James (born in Down Court).

James (Israel's brother) was the first to move living in
Staple (Shatterling in fact) in the 1881 census with his
wife and children. Israel later moved to Staple, then
Littlebourne via Goodnestone. James his brother later moved
to Crixhall Court south of Staple.

In 1901 none of the family were living at Down Court,
supposedly within the parish of Woodnesborough in 1881.
Israel's parent's James and Hannah had moved to Staple by
 this point.

There are several places with similar names: Dane Court
near Tilmanstone and Denne Court near Woodnesborough/Eastry
however a Down Court never appears on any maps (from 1881
 on the web) or since 1901 that I have (1950s, 1974, 1990s,
1999). I done a census search and in 1881 only the
Cleaver's lived at Down Court. Dane Court and Denne Court
 had different families living there.

The only reference on the web to such a site is the site of
the Manor of Down Court in Staple (I wondered if the
boundaries changed, as this is a recent site stating where
it is now. It makes me think it was probably within
 Woodnesborough parish in 1881).

 This link is here:
 http://www.kentarchaeology.ac/bassets/kasatcksprodn1.pdf

On google for this link it only mentions Down Court, Staple
but doing a search through the document does not reveal
 anything.

Therefore I wondered whether you have any maps of the
Staple/Woodnesborough area in the past showing where Down
Court is or whether you/any readers have heard of it. As I
cannot find it anywhere, and it does not seem to exist
today. It would be nice to know as my ancestors lived
there. The Cleaver's were all agricultural labourers by the
 way.

 Many thanks for your help

Message:  For Jon Harvey - The Wheatsheaf

I sent this message to your e-mail address but it was sent
back so I thought I'd better put it on here!

My husband & I were staying at Great Weddington, in Ash,
last weekend and we went past your house, on our way to
Westmarsh. It reminded me of your entry on Staple OnLine –
 did you see my reply?

Whilst at Great Weddington we found they had a book
called ‘Ash – An East Kent Village’. I found the following
 information on the ‘net:

A new book "Ash - An East Kent Village" has been published.
David Downes, the author, read history at Jesus College
Cambridge and has had a successful career as a solicitor,
first practising in Deal and Sandwich. He moved in 1953 to
The Street in Ash and continued practising until 1995. He
has been a member of Ash Parochial Church Council since
1954 and its archivist for almost as long.

The book describes the parish of Ash, one of the largest in
Kent with 7,011 acres on the road between Canterbury and
the old Cinque Port of Sandwich. It refers to Planché’s
book "A Corner of Kent" - written in 1864, which stated "in
historical associations, in archaeological interest, few
parishes on the United Kingdom perhaps can equal, and
certainly none surpass, that of Ash-next-Sandwich". It was
created a parish in 1282, having been just part of the
great manor of Wingham, belonging to the archbishops of
 Canterbury,

This is a very useful reference book. If anyone would like
to buy a copy, send a cheque for £18.50 to D Mawson, The
Post Office, 79 The Street, Canterbury, Kent CT3 2AD.

I did not have time to read it but there might be something
useful in it about the Wheatsheaf? I thought I’d buy a
 copy!

I believe my Great Aunt Kit and her husband Harry Darby
once lived in Corner Cottage (Fleming Road,Barnsole)in the

on the back which housed the kitchen. This is all I can
remember I'm afraid! Uncle Harry had come down from the
North to work on the Kent coalfield, Aunt Kit was a local
girl, having previously lived in Westmarsh with her widowed

URL:Enquiry about the Friend family
Message:  I am researching the Friend family who brough up a William
Bayly (their grandson). He subsequently had a market
garden and his home was West View Staple. I know that this
is now a vineyard as the proprietor told me he bought the
land from Mr. Bayly. What I want to know is more about his
mother who was Amelia Friend. I belive they lived at
Somerfield farm which may have been nearer Ash. |If anyone
has any information about this family would they please get
in touch. I dont think Amelia's mother had any children by
Mr. Friend and the rumour in the family was that Amelia was
not his child but it seems he was very good to Amelia
Bayly's family of nine children and may have given land to
William who they seem to have brought up. I would also
like to know if anyone has information about William Bayly,
her husband who became a London City Missionary. I think
his date of birth may be around l842 - he was married at
Ash Congregational church in l862 and celebrated his golden
wedding there in l912. Thank you for any information you
 can give me.

Message:  I am researching Pettet/its all over Kent and have
discovered that a Thomas and Ann Pettit were buried at
Staple in 1811. I would be grateful if someone could look
to see if a headstone still exists or enquire whether
anyone has recorded the information from the Church
Memorial Inscriptions. Many thanks and by the way, I think
this is a tremendous village web-site. Rita Pettet of

Message:  Does anyone know if there were after 1637 or so any of the
Eaton family still living in Staple? My many greats-uncle
William with his family and my many-greats grandfather,
Jonas, left in 1637, and I wonder if any Eatons remained in
the area and for how long. They came originally from the
parish of St Peter in Dover. Thanks for any help.

Message:  Has anyone any information on my Great-Grandparents, who
grew up in Staple in around 1830-40? My Great-Grandfather
was William Bayly, who was brought up at Summerfield
Farm.Family story has it that he was an orphan, so it
could be that he had foster parents, who might not have
the same name? My Great Grandmother was Amelia. Her
Mother's surname was Furken, and story has it that Amelia
was the illegitimate daughter of the son of the house
where her Mother was working. Her Mother later married a
Mr. Friend, who brought Amelia up as his own.(I note that
the schoolmaster in 1842, who married Sarah Cozens, was a
John William Friend, and wonder about the connection?)When
William Bayly married Amelia, she was probably known as
Amelia Friend. They would have married possibly in the
 1840's or 50's.

Message:  I have recently undertaken to research my family history -
the LOVE family, who were seen in and around the Staple area
between 1780s-1850's. The information I have gained so far
is that a man I believe to be my x5 grandfather a Stephen
Love of Ash married a Jane Trice of Staple in 1789. They
settled in Staple and raised a family. One of their son's
(Stephen) unfortuantely became a bit wayward and was
transported, for the crime of bigamy, to Australia! I am
particularly interested in any information on this family
and was wondering if any fellow Staple Online users could
 assist.

Message:  RICHARD CHURCH born 1817 , son of Ann Church and unknown
father. However entry in Staple PRs shows christian names
 as Richard Henry Wellard.
Richard Church was my Gt Gt Grandfather and is shown in the
'81 Census as a Shepherd living at Shatterling.
I would like information about where Ann Church came from
and what happened to her. If she did not marry she might be
the Ann buried in 1875 aged 77.
I would also like to identify the father of her child. The
only information that could be relevant is that a Richard
Henry Wellard is listed in the 81 Census as born Deal,
 living in Deal aged 83.
Any comments or information much apreciated

He came to the US in 1852. According to old letters written

Sandwich. She was born in Wingham.
