Message:  Not too sure what is falling off there Alden.

The diff is inside the gearbox and cannot get out. There
is a screw in the middle that holds the two parts together
but that cannot get out past the "dog-bone" drive shaft.
Take a look at the exploded view on the Mardave web site.
You will find the link on the links page of this site.
You can then be a bit more specific on the problem.

In answer to Alistair's question, nothing much breaks.
Keep the screws tight and make sure that repeatedly
running in to fixed objects does not change the
front “kick-up” on the chassis plate.

The pins on the dog-bone shafts will wear away to nothing
but can be replaced with piano wire.

 Cheers

My cobras back wheels diff things keep flying off round
corners and coming out. Its really anoying.

I think its cause the left wheel is a bit loose and keeps
coming out, the diff thing keeps shooting out (its an
electric model if that makes a difference)

Message:  Hi Jim,

My racing commitments changed rather than diminished.

I went back to kart racing as seen here:
 http://www.planet-venom.co.uk/race4fun/

This lasted until I ran out of money about three years ago
although I still have the kart and intend having a final
fling before they bring on the zimmer.

My racing at present is confined to on-line sim. I race
the Grand Prix Legends game on-line. If you haven't tried
this then you are missing a treat. It's the most fun you
can have indoors. And it's cheap. It's what computers
 were invented for. ;-)

 Have a look here: http://www.planet-

 Have fun

Message:  Glad you enjoyed the read.
Making things from scratch is a much bigger undertaking
and would have been the next step.

I spoke to my local model shop, Formby Models, and I
understand that the Cobra is no longer in production. I'm
not sure if the undertray was ever made by Mardave in the
first place. Raccraft would be my bet but I have seen or
 heard of them for years.

If I made another carbon fibre chassis I would probably
have to make it fit someone else's body.

Is the off-road market still there? I don’t race much
above once a year now, so have lost touch.

Hope you all get your pet cobras up to full health in the
 near future.

 All the best

Terrific work. The only suggestions I would make is to
build those uprights from scratch rather than bend them
with heat supplied as they would be more rigid.

For anyone interested i have two cobras for sale on ebay at
present as well as tons of other bits and pieces for them.

It depends when it was making the noise but I expect that
the diff balls have got flats on them and the pressure
 plates need flatening.

If it made the noise all of the time then either the diff
was too loose (plus the above) or there is something else
 seriously wrong.

Keep reminding me about the slipper clutch. I do want to
draw it up it's just that everything else is manic at the
 minute.

Have you made any changes to the diff at all? Had a couple
of problems with it, ended up changing the main bearings.
But in the final it sounded like a turbo diesel (bit
noisy!), qualified in the C final due to problem with
diff, but got 1st place even with a diesel!

Message:  Hi Clive,
I met you at woodvale, thanks again for the diff gear and
bearings - your a life saver. Got a spare one on order now,
 but hopefully won't need it!
I've been looking at your mods with interest since then.
Carried out some of the changes to the front:
 >Moved the shocks to the front of tower, but looking at
your pictures i've attached it slightly different at the
bottom. I've used a ball joint arrangement of a 4-tec (my
lads got one, so i borrowed some bits!), secured the ball
(it's a bit like a bush with a spherical outer) to the
front web on the wish bone (angled-hence the ball joint)
with a allen key headed machine screw (counterbored the
head into the web so it doesn't interfer with wheels-
hopefully i haven't created a weak point, but time will
 tell!).
 >Also scolloped out the front upright to obtain more
steering, the stop is now the locking nut securing the ball
joint for the track rod with the wish bone (which is
obviously why you've scolloped it out-avoiding that until
i've tried what i've got now!).
Can't try it yet as i'm waiting for a rear stub axle (which
sheared off, recently) once up and running again i'll see
 what it's like.
To be honest the steering not been to bad, i'd been
tweaking it prior to woodvale, so i'm avoiding moving the
bellcrank also at present until i've tried it.
 >>Might have a do at the rear anti squat/toe in change, but
need to get a spare gearbox hsg first (just incase i cock
 it up!)
 >>Could't see how i could move the bottom of the rear shock
back - it looks a bit tight?!
Have to get back to work (boss is calling!)
My email address is : andyrids@compuserve.com if you've any
 further suggestion for me.

price guide to all the upgrades you have made, because from
what I see in your pictures very little of the original kit
remains, which raises the question of why you should buy
one in the first place, and if you have already, whether it
would indeed be cheaper to upgrade it as opposed to getting
a better car... I believe in the cobra, though it is, in
all honesty a bit crap. I have dicked it up a bit, finding
little difference in performance, and have now decided to
get me a petrol car, cuss batteries are really poo. Anyone
heard of a brand called flying point? If so email me with
your comments at dsgriffiths@email.com . Are they any
good? Or should I go for the safe option of and HPI rush?

Message:  Useful site.

Got a few Cobra's, including one with the Fibre-Lyte
chassis. Very very tough and great fun for my 11 year-old
son to race. Cheap and easy to drive.
 Keep up the good work.

sell for a reasonable sum? Either a Sport or a TQ, no

Message:  Hi there,
Thank god for a site about the Cobra! My eldest son (6) has
started racing with the local club. We were originally sold
a Tamiya Fighter which has proved near impossible to race
because of it's weird suspension. I came across an old
Cobra on E-bay to keep the youngest happy (3), having had a
play around with it it is easily a better suited car for
racing. The biggest difficulty is getting any info on the
car. Hope fully your site will help redress the balance!
I'm now looking for a second Cobra for the eldest to race.

Message:  Im sorry that as of the moment I dont have an email address
as im in the middle of moving. thank you for your reply as
ive said im moving and the only chance of getting on the
net is via my collage once a week.I also have a very old
meteor for wich i have used to drop the rear end using its
front dampers.I have also gained on the front end by
maufacturing a new shocker plate out of ali with wich i
have increased its camber. Although limiting space on the
chasis I have turned the motor and gear box ass around in
the atempt to even the weight distribution out. My next
thought is to reduce the front end width giving hopefully a
much tighter turning circle, the problem is I dont race my
self so one is deppendent on my 12yr old son to test drive
 and get his approval

Message:  Good to see someone still messing with the old Cobra. I
used to race one in the West Pennine events and BRCA
Northern League. My only mods were a set of Traxxas or
Kyosho Option House Gold shocks (depending on track type),
an extra outboard mounting hole on the rear wishbones and a
Schumacher Bosscat rear shock mount, along with some
titanium turnbuckles and an eye for a good set up.
I was always scaring the big boys, consistently making A
and B finals, especially so in winter on the indoor tracks.
I was even sponsored by Mardave at one point, although the
 support from them was limited.
Eventually, frustrated by the lack of 'dialability' I went
for a Losi and in the season immediately following got my
 F2 licence.
The racing days are long gone, as is the Losi, however the
Cobra remains and will probably race again one day when
everyone has forgotten what they are.
Good site, cheers for bringing back some good memories.

Message:  hi mint site.. i am 16 and from stafford. i have many
schumacher SST's but none of em were as much fun as me
first car the cobra. To be honest i thrashed it to shit and
it never ever fell apart. i made some mods for indoor
carpet racing at Stafford. I put the shox at the front like
you, they were shox of the HPI RS4 and i was thinkin of
goin carbon but i moved onto scale saloon. I saw the cobra
sitting there all dusty so i have now taken it to bits and
im gonna do i rebuild and maybe buy some gear and do some
of your mods.. although i am unsure about the front
suspension.... BUT I LOVE YOUR servo saver mod.. but how do
you get it to be smooth. with mine if you make it slack
then the thing just somes loose after some bashing or if
you tighten it up it is just too dam tight for the servo to
move it. i got a ko pro 2000 so ill fit that and im
thinking of going to 8 cell on me LRP IPC (it works in my
plane) but i aint sure if i will fry me tri-sonic motor..
anyway if you are on icq my number is 36818100 and your
site is well interesting and your cobra looks sweet
 ciao =) . R!ko
